MEEWASIN QUEEN TO SHUT DOWN SERVICE FOR ONE DAY

May 31, 2011

The motor vessel Meewasin Queen will not operate on Monday, June 6th to avoid debris travelling downriver as flows from Gardiner Dam increase this weekend. She is expected to resume normal service on Tuesday, June 7th.

"As the river level increases, trees, lumber and things like picnic benches tend to wash off the riverbank upstream and get carried through the city," says Shearwater River Cruises manager of operations Peter Kingsmill. "The bulk of that stuff will likely come through on Monday following two releases of water planned from the Gardiner Dam spillway later this week, and we simply want to minimize the need to continually dodge debris while we travel on the river."

Shearwater continues daily to monitor river flows, which so far have not been a problem for normal operation of the Meewasin Queen, although the company has docked the Saskatoon Princess until river flows subside because she lacks the horsepower to make reasonable time against the heavy current.
