Saskatoon' newest family festival is set to launch at River Landing the weekend of August 6th and 7th. River Lights is a first-of-its-kind event for Saskatoon featuring a Night Boat Parade with a flotilla of brightly illuminated and decorated boats. River Landing will be glowing with colourful light displays from the BHP Billiton Enchanted Forest. Other special festival activities include a Boat Show by participating Saskatoon marine dealers and Water Sports demonstrations including canoeing, kayaking, dragon boating, rowing and paddle boarding. "The Sand Bar", constructed on River Landing, will be the place for tropical refreshments, and BBQs will be set-up throughout River Landing offering delicious summer food.
Hugh Vassos and Brian Storey, the creators of River Lights say the festival has been a few years in the making. "We've modeled River Lights after other popular water-based tourism events in Canadian and American cities,” comments Vassos. "Saskatoon is a perfect venue for a Night Boat Parade with the river running through the downtown and the great view from River Landing. River Lights is designed to grow into one of Saskatchewan's top annual tourism, sports, and cultural attractions," added Vassos. Brian Storey commented; "River Lights has the potential to expand from a two day event this year to a week long festival with the addition of a number of planned events as we go along. We are excited about how this festival is going to grow into a huge summer festival for Saskatoon."
The Water Sports demonstrations go both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Night Boat Parade starts at approximately 10:00 PM Saturday night. Admission is free of charge and spectators will have the opportunity to purchase glow sticks and strobe lights to become part of the River Lights experience. People are encouraged to come early to River Landing to get a good view of the parade which runs between the Traffic Bridge and the Sid Buckwold Freeway Bridge.
