SASKATONIANS ENCOURAGED TO MAKE NOISE ON FEBRUARY 12 TO MARK THE ONE-YEAR COUNTDOWN TO THE OLYMPICS

On February 12 at 6:00 p.m., Saskatonians are encouraged to make noise to start the official countdown to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

With only one year to go before Canada hosts the 2010 Winter Games, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games is inviting communities across the country to help celebrate the countdown to 2010 in their own unique ways.

To begin the countdown, Saskatonians and all Canadians are being asked to fill the winter air with noise at 6:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, February 12. The wave of noise will roll across the country through each time zone. Honk your horns, ring a bell, sing out loud, and let the rest of the world know Canada is ready to host the world in 2010.

Saskatoon is one of the cities where the Olympic Torch Relay will pass through. It will arrive in Saskatoon on Monday, January 11, 2010. A local organizing committee will be looking after the community celebrations and details of the Torch Relay when it is here in Saskatoon.

Local residents can apply to be a torchbearer as it winds through a route in Saskatoon. Citizens can download application forms from the 2010 Vancouver Olympic website at www.vancouver2010.com. Applicants must be 13 years of age or older at the time the Torch Relay begins (October 30, 2009).
