The Rez Christmas Play this season will see the return of the 2003 production but with an important new twist. For the first time in SNTC history, the production will be presented in the Cree Language with English surtitles projected above the actors. In past productions the Rez Christmas Story has featured an English language production with bits of Cree heard throughout the play – this year the exact opposite is true.
For Artistic Director Curtis Peeteetuce this has been a long and challenging process that he anticipates will be rewarding for the company and the community. “We hope our audience enjoys the kohkoms of Kiwetinohk as they share their story in their own language. First of all, much love and gratitude to all the translators, dramaturges and administrators involved in this project from the very beginning. My gratitude and love also to all the cast and crew, who have taken on this production with heart and courage, all in an effort to learn, love and share in the nehiyawewin (Cree language).”

The Kohkoms (grandmothers) of Kiwetinohk, Sihkos, Zula and Clare, make their holiday return in the remount of this popular production. This season, new interim chief – and nephew of Sihkos – Kevin Cedar, is intent on cutting spending at any cost in order to save a community in debt. Sihkos suspects there is something Kevin is up to and hiding from everyone in Kiwetinohk.
