Published: Apr 2, 2014

EDMONTON, AB - April 2, 2014 - Saskatoon Sports Tourism is proud to announce Cameco was today awarded the 2014 Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance's (CSTA) Sport Event Sponsor of the Year PRESTIGE Award at the CSTA Sport Events Congress in Edmonton, AB. Cameco was named a finalist in the category for their involvement in the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup.

The 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup was held in Saskatoon from May 16 to 26, 2013, and saw the Halifax Mooseheads defeat the Portland Winterhawks to win the franchise's first ever Memorial Cup championship. The event in Saskatoon achieved the fourth-highest attendance total in the history of the event, with 82,503 spectators heading out to Credit Union Centre over the course of the tournament. As the premier local sponsor of the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup, Cameco was instrumental to the tournament's success, providing sponsorship, host committee support and volunteers.

"We're very proud of the way our people stepped up to deliver a first-class event," said Tim Gitzel, Cameco President and CEO, and the event co-chair. "At Cameco, we want to support community events that make a difference, and the Memorial Cup certainly had a positive impact for Saskatoon."

"Saskatoon Sports Tourism would like to thank Cameco for their continued support of sport events in our city," said Randy Fernets, Managing Director of Saskatoon Sports Tourism. "Sponsors are critical to event success, and Cameco went above and beyond with their MasterCard Memorial Cup involvement. Congratulations to Cameco, the CSTA Sport Event Sponsor of the Year."

The PRESTIGE Awards celebrate the people, places and events that make the Canadian sport tourism industry so dynamic and important to the economic fabric of our communities. Finalists were honoured at the PRESTIGE Awards luncheon presented by Saskatoon Sports Tourism on April 2, 2014, in conjunction with the 2014 CSTA Sport Events Congress in Edmonton, AB at the Shaw Conference Centre.
