Empress of Ireland exhibit at the Saskatoon WDM
The Western Development Museum in Saskatoon is pleased to present a display on the Empress of Ireland July 18 to 23, 2013.
May 2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland which occurred on May 29, 1914 at 1:55 a.m. Owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, this great ship measuring 174 metres (570 feet) disappeared in 14 minutes in the waters of the St. Lawrence River near Rimouski, Quebec. One thousand four hundred seventy seven people were on board; 1012 of them died. This disaster, overshadowed by the outbreak of the First World War, remains, to this day, the largest maritime disaster in Canadian waters.
The Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père, in collaboration with Heritage Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, is launching a Canadian information tour during the summer of 2013. A display stand will showcase the ship in all its 1914 glory. Visitors will be see pictures of the beautiful ship’s interior as well as a reconstitution of the disaster and rarely seen video images of the underwater wreck. Documents and information related to the exhibit will also be displayed including the list of onboard passengers from the first trip to the time of the tragedy, a log book relating the ship’s history and a complete calendar of all remembrance activities in 2014.
Organizers hope to get in touch with as many descendants of the men, women and children who sailed on the Empress of Ireland between the years 1906 and 1914. The estimated number of passengers is over 117, 000. The tour will also promote the commemorative activities to take place in Rimouski during the month of May 2014.
As the exhibit travels across Canada in 2013, Pascale St-Amand, project manager, will be on hand to answer questions from visitors interested in this important page of Canadian history. She will also note the hundreds of stories from immigrants who adopted this country at the beginning of the 20th century.
