Saskatoon Hosts International Men's Tennis Tournament

Published: Jun 25, 2012

Saskatoon, SK – Saskatoon Sports Tourism and the Riverside Badminton and Tennis Club are excited to announce the return of the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) Saskatoon Futures Tennis Tournament, taking place July 7 - 15, 2012. This ITF Circuit event is a men’s entry level tournament for professional tennis players and enables them to earn points to qualify for Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour events. The ITF Saskatoon Futures 2011 was the first Canadian event of this caliber west of Toronto.

"The 2011 Saskatoon Futures event was a phenomenal success and the Riverside Badminton and Tennis Club did an outstanding job in their inaugural year,” said Gavin Ziv, Director of National Events, Tennis Canada. “The support from the club, members, volunteers, sponsors and community was excellent. We are really looking forward to seeing the growth of this event in the future."

Last year’s ITF Saskatoon Futures champion, Canadian Vasek Pospisil, saw his victory kick-start a great 2011 season. Pospisil met legend Roger Federer in the second round of the 2011 Rogers Cup in Toronto in August and was an integral part of Canada’s Davis Cup victory over Israel in September.  His world ranking – #339 at the start of 2011 – rose to #95 by February 2012.

This year’s entry list is headed by 2011 Saskatoon Futures runner-up Erik Chvojka, ranked #232 in the world.  Last week, Chvojka lost a 5-set heartbreaker in the final qualification round of Wimbledon.  Australians Benjamin Mitchell (#234) and Matt Reid (#258) are close behind in an entry list which includes players from France, Great Britain, USA, Japan, Switzerland, Belgium and Singapore. The doubles competition will feature former Canadian Olympian and world tour competitor Brian Gyetko, currently a high-performance coach in Saskatoon.

Qualifying rounds take place July 7 - 9, with the main tournament running through the week, culminating with the doubles final on Friday, July 13, and singles final on Sunday, July 15. Up to 72 competitors will vie for a prize pool of $15,000. Spectators of all ages are welcome and admission for the week-long event is free.
