Shakespeare festival announces first ever high school video contest
Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan is excited to introduce its first ever High School YouTube Video Contest! This fun new initiative creates a unique opportunity for high schools to become involved with the festival - presenting a new way to explore the story of Hamlet (playing at Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan this summer) and allowing students to exercise their creativity through social media!
Any current high school students (grade 9, 10, 11, or 12) enrolled in Saskatoon or surrounding area. Individuals and/or teams are encouraged to register as members of a specific classroom in order to be considered for the in-class workshop prize.
Entries can be submitted individually or as a team (size is not limited) and will fall into one of two categories:
1. 30 Second Advertisement – produce an exciting television advertisement promoting Hamlet at the 2012 season of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan
2. 90 Second “Movie Trailer” – get creative with a short exploration of Hamlet, done in the style of a
Hollywood Movie Trailer
Creative and unique ideas are encouraged. Participants may submit multiple videos, in each category.
Completed videos must be uploaded to YouTube (a free account is required) by March 15th. Participants must then send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject “Shakespeare video contest” and include the following information:
- Name of all contributing participants (and group name if applicable)
- Name of High School and current grade
- Teacher/class/period (if participating as a member of a specific classroom)
- Link to submitted video on YouTube
Videos will be organized by type (advertisement or trailer), grade (9, 10, 11, or 12), and by the number of participants (individual or group). The resulting 16 categories will then by reviewed by a special panel of “celebrity” judges. The highest scoring videos in each category will win tickets to see Hamlet this summer at Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan.
People’s Choice Award:
The video that achieves the highest number of views on YouTube will win tickets to Hamlet this summer (a little self-promotion is encouraged!)
Classrooms that exhibit the highest level of participation (largest number of videos) will be rewarded with a special in-class workshop with Artistic Director Mark von Eschen. One workshop will be awarded per grade.
