Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Announces High-School Video Contest Winners

Published: Apr 23, 2012

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s high-school YouTube video contest - the first contest of its kind, which tasked students from Saskatoon and area to create short movie-trailer style promotions in support of the festival’s upcoming production of Hamlet.

The contest was announced in the early part of the year, with the submission deadline falling on the “ides of March”.  The number of entries was modest; however, all participants demonstrated exceptional creativity and effort.

In the ninety-second category, an enthusiastic group of grade 12 students from Aden Bowman Collegiate (consisting of Morgan Carter, Taylor Friesen, Celeste Nicholson, Michelle Epp and Chichi Chukwu) stood out for their chilling and artistic Hollywood-style interpretation of the great tragedy, which snagged them the top place in that category.  Their work can be viewed here.

In the thirty-second category, a grade 12 class from Nutana Collegiate (led by English 30B teacher Shelley Hosaluck) explored the play from a different perspective; submitting two separate videos, each with their own unique spin.  The first, titled “Hamwwrap”, encourages viewers to attend the show in the form of a carefully constructed rap, performed by student Kyle Roy.  In the second video, titled “Shakespeare Smackdown”, Hamlet prepares to take on his uncle Claudius in the boxing arena, with ringside commentary by student Kain Boldt.

Both groups will receive tickets to this year’s production of Hamlet, playing at the festival site from July 11th to August 21st; and in May, Nutana Collegiate will be treated to a special in-class workshop with Artistic Director Mark von Eschen.  Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan wishes to congratulate this year’s winners, and looks forward to seeing even more submissions next year.
