Tourism Saskatoon launches Green Stem environmental initiative

Program encourages sustainable workplace practices

SASKATOON, SK - January 23, 2014 - Tourism Saskatoon is excited to announce the launch of its new, member-focused sustainability initiative. Green Stem is a powerful online resource designed to help Tourism Saskatoon members incorporate sustainable practices into their daily workplace activities.

Today's travellers are more conscious of the effects of their tourism activities. Purchasing and travel decisions are made based on the environmental sustainability of the businesses and communities they visit. Tourism Saskatoon wants to ensure its membership is able to respond to this trend.

"Globally, tourism has a significant environmental impact. Green Stem is our sector's effort to encourage green and sustainable tourism practices at a local level," said Todd Brandt, president and CEO of Tourism Saskatoon. "Markets are increasingly demanding it, and we will support the concrete efforts made by our members who join the program."

The Green Stem website is relevant for businesses of all sizes and features ideas and resources for all staff members including owners, managers, and new employees. It houses a variety of easy-to-implement tips for those just starting down the sustainability path, as well as a collection of guides for those who are ready to look at sustainability in a more integrated and comprehensive way. The website also includes links to financial supports and awards programs that celebrate environmentally-focused achievements.

The Local Champions feature and the Sustainability Pledge complement the resources found on the Green Stem site by creating local dialogue about sustainability and developing a sense of camaraderie - and maybe some friendly competition - between businesses.

The Local Champions component invites business owners to self-nominate or nominate others for demonstrated leadership in sustainability. These individuals will be featured on the Green Stem site, providing encouragement and new ideas for their peers. The Sustainability Pledge captures the intent of the entire initiative, giving business owners an opportunity to clearly state their commitment to sustainability in the workplace.

"I took the Green Stem Pledge to reinforce a long-time commitment to environmental responsibility and to explore additional ways of making my business more sustainable," said Cliff Speer, owner and manager of CanoeSki Discovery Company. "There are always opportunities to push things to a higher level from wherever one starts, and the Green Stem Pledge is a public confirmation of my commitment to making a healthier community and planet."

CanoeSki is one of five tourism businesses in Saskatoon that have taken the Sustainability Pledge. Tourism Saskatoon expects that number to steadily grow as members explore the Green Stem website and begin to implement sustainable practices in their workplaces.
