Amati Quartet - Tenth Season - the Season of Celebration!
The Amati Quartet launches their 10th season – the Season of Celebration – with performances to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Haydn’s famous ‘Rider’ Quartet, and the 200th anniversary of Dvořák’s most celebrated and delightful quartet, the ‘American’ , as well as a historic look back at the debut concert of the Amati Quartet in September 2003 when they performed both the ‘Rider ‘and the ’American’ quartets.
Written for London audiences and the concert stage at a time when Haydn was the most famous composer in all of Europe, ‘the Rider’ was nicknamed for the energy and galloping rhythms of the outer movements. On every chamber musicians’ list of desert island discs, ‘the American’ offers some of the most delightful and spirited string quartet writing there is with snappy rhythms, folk tune melodies, bird calls, and the hauntingly beautiful slow movement duet between the violin and cello. The most lighthearted of Brahms’ chamber music, Brahms admitted this string quartet was his own favourite.
