Celebrate Canada 150 by bringing your family and friends to explore the Little Stone Schoolhouse (LSS) from 11 am - 2 pm July 1-8, or August 5-11! The school is only open to the public twice a year, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity! The LSS is a one-room stone school constructed in 1887 by local stonemason Alexander Marr with the help of community members & was the area’s first public school & community building, serving as a meeting house, election centre, dance hall, and library. Originally known as Victoria School, the LSS’s design & stonework speak to the importance of education in the community & optimism for the future. It is known as one of the first heritage conservation projects in western Canada, sponsored by the International Order Daughters of the Empire as a tribute to pioneer education. The school was dismantled stone by stone & reassembled on the grounds of the then newly established U of S in 1911. As part of a Centennial Project, the Saskatoon Council of Women raised funds to have the LSS restored in 1967. It now serves as a schoolhouse museum & built heritage asset, seasonally open for youth, public tours & open houses.
