Local leaders recognized at Tourism Leadership Celebration awards

13 recipients honoured for their leadership and dedication to tourism in Saskatoon

SASKATOON, SK – Tourism Saskatoon, Saskatoon Sports Tourism and the Saskatoon Hotel Association are pleased to announce the award recipients of the fourth annual Saskatoon Shines! Tourism Leadership Celebration. Held in conjunction with Tourism Week in Canada and Saskatchewan Tourism Week, the event took place Monday evening at the Saskatoon Travelodge Hotel.

The Saskatoon Shines! Tourism Leadership Celebration is an annual event to publicly recognize the efforts of volunteers who participate in bidding for events and/or seeing them through to completion.

The 2012 award recipients are:

  • Karen Heinrichs – Board Chair, PotashCorp Fringe Festival, hosted by 25th Street Theatre
  • Gregg Bamford – President, WakeRide
  • Jack Vicq – Board Chair, Meewasin
  • Lloyd Beazley – Board Chair, Wanuskewin
  • Dwight Simon – International Conference on Wind Engineering Bid
  • Brian Keegan – National Congress on Rural Education
  • Eugene Arcand – Multiple conferences and events
  • Norm Dray – Saskatchewan Education Leadership Unit
  • David Phillips – Tournament Director, International Tennis Federation Futures Tournament– Saskatoon
  • Fritz Schumann – Meet Coordinator, 2012 Canada Cup III and Canadian Junior National Speed Skating Championship Bid
  • Jack Brodsky and Tim Gitzel – Bid Committee Co-Chairs, 2013 Memorial Cup
  • Pat Hayes-Schryer – President, 2012 Canadian National Fencing Championship Bid

“The strength of an event is dependent on the dedication of local leaders,” said Todd Brandt, President and CEO of Tourism Saskatoon. “So much of our tourism economy, from employment to revenues, relies on individuals who give their time and energy to events they are passionate about.”

“Hosting events of any type is a major commitment. The Saskatoon Shines! Tourism Leadership Celebration is our industry’s way of saying thanks, and honouring the award recipients for their outstanding effort,” says Brandt.

According to estimated figures by Tourism Saskatchewan, tourism in Saskatoon is worth over $500 million. This accounts for close to one-third of the $1.6 billion in travel expenditures throughout Saskatchewan.
