Tourism Saskatoon proud to support this growing celebration of music and dance.
SASKATOON, SK – August 4, 2011 – The Saskatoon Reggae and World Music Festival is back for their seventh year, August 11 and 13, bringing the beat of several music genres to the ears of Saskatonians and visitors.
As an interactive start to the festival, the public is encouraged to attend the free workshops and performances August 11 at River Landing. Starting at 6:00 pm, the evening will feature an African dance and drumming workshop, Saskatoon Salsa performance and workshop, def Sol Productions, and DJ Juan Valdez.
On August 13, the festival continues with the main event at Saskatoon Friendship Park from noon to 10:00 pm. Ticket holders will be entertained by a varied program of music and dance with headliner Jah Cutta, Lyndon John X, Oral Fuentes, Sabor Salsa, Kari Alba, Saskatoon Salsa, Ritmo Latino, def Sol Productions, Sephoria, and Veronique Poulin.
The Saturday event moves from Rotary Park to Friendship Park this year, and the organizers are eager to make this their new home long-term.
“We are proud to support this growing festival,” says JoAnne Wasko, Director of Markets, Advertising and Media with Tourism Saskatoon. “A reggae and world music festival is a wonderful complement to the other genres of music that are celebrated each year at events such as the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, the Saskatoon Blues Festival and the John Arcand Fiddle Fest.”
Although still in its infancy, the festival attracts visitors from beyond Saskatchewan’s borders, travelling from B.C., Alberta and Manitoba.
"People are already scheduling the Saskatoon Reggae and World Music Festival into their summer plans," says Oral Fuentes, the festival’s Director.
The festival originated as a smaller celebration indoors at the Odeon Events Centre in 2005 when Fuentes, also a musician, would host Caribbean and Latin parties with local DJ Juan Valdez. From there, the event became Saskatoon ReggaeFest, and further grew into the present Saskatoon Reggae and World Music Festival, run by Saskatoon Reggae Festival Inc., a registered, non-profit organization. This is the third year the festival takes place outdoors.
