Saskatoon — The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival has added two phenomenal artists to their lineup for this summer's event.
Critically acclaimed hip hop act The Roots will return to the Festival on Sunday, July 1, performing on the TD Mainstage in the Bessborough Gardens. The Philadelphia-based group thrilled a sold-out crowd at the 2010 Festival, and fans have demanded their return ever since. The Heavyweights Brass Band and The Steadies will be enlisted to kick things off.
One of jazz's leading figures over many decades, saxophonist Wayne Shorter will be making his first appearance at the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. Shorter, who the New York Times hailed as "the most important living composer in jazz," will perform with his quartet at the Broadway Theatre on Saturday, June 23. Saskatoon's Dean McNeill Septet will open the concert.
Tickets for these concerts go on sale Wednesday, March 21 at 10am and may be purchased online at saskjazz.com, by phone at 306.652.4700 or 1.800.638.1211, and at the Festival Box Office, located on the 7th floor of the Delta Bessborough hotel (707-601 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon).
Additional concert announcements will take place in the weeks and months ahead, and the complete Festival program will be announced in May. The 26th SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival runs June 22 – July 1, 2012. For more information, visit the Festival website at saskjazz.com.
