SSO reports on past season results at AGM.
SASKATOON, SK - “We have a big job in front of us, but we are extremely confident and enthusiastic about the future,” says acting-president Lynn Ewing of the Saskatoon Symphony Society, the governance body of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, which released its annual report and financial statements at its annual general meeting today.
The report shows gains in most areas of earned revenue, including all important ticket and subscription sales, and corporate sponsorships. However, due to a “timing issue” related to the planned launch of a multi-year fundraising campaign, the society posted a deficit of $113,215 which Ewing says will be more than offset by the first year’s proceeds from the campaign which will launch very soon.
“The Symphony’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has engaged the services of DCG Philanthropic Services Inc. to mount the campaign,” says Ewing. “The planning committee has worked for nearly a year, with representatives from Deloitte, to ensure the Saskatoon Symphony can not only achieve its strategic goals, the most important of which is long-term financial stability, but can also leverage its assets to meet needs in the larger community through social responsibility. We are looking forward to getting on with the job.”
The Annual Report, distributed at the meeting outlines selected highlights from the year ended May 31, including a successful first year in the organization’s headquarters on 20th Street West, new appointments to the orchestra and staff, a wide range of performances and partnerships with local and international artists and businesses, participation in the first Pan-Canadian Culture Days, the donation of a concert grand piano (by the Ewing family) which will help equip the SSO’s 20th Street home for small concerts and recitals, and the world premiere performance of a new work by SSO principal double bass, Richard Carnegie.
The report also highlights a successful SSO Book and Music Sale, which netted almost $100,000 (plus a sponsorship from SIGA) for the Symphony. Ewing acknowledges the importance of volunteers to the SSO, especially in the area of fundraising. “We are blessed to have such a hard-working, capable group of Book and Music Sale volunteers, and we want to thank the Sale management committee especially, for ensuring the success of this year’s sale, with the move to the new location (in SSO headquarters in Riversdale). Plus, the volunteers from the elegant Red and Black Affair, and other events deserve our thanks as well.”
The first concert of the new Saskatoon Symphony season takes place Saturday, September 22, with the return of Fernando Varela, one of the world’s great voices, for the Conexus Pops Series, “Fernando Varela – Classical to Classic Rock” presented by PotashCorp. Varela, who last month was invited to perform in Italy with Andréa Bocelli for a PBS television special, has had his career fast-tracked after gaining the attention of 16-time Grammy Award winning producer David Foster who said “I was blown away” by Varela’s audition. Earlier this summer, Lionel Richie said of Varela’s performance “Magic! Brilliant! He stopped the room.”
